garbled :0 on (updated) Fedora 9

Does anyone have VNC working sharing :0 (console display) on
Fedora 9 + updates?

I think it worked "off the torrent" with F9, but some later
update, either VNC's or xorg's, now generates a garbled display,
caused by the display width not matching the remote display's
width.

My remote is 1280x1024 and I seem to either get 1600x1200 and/or
1400x1400, as displayed by connection info.
