number pad error in vi when using vnc

I am having problems when using the number pad on my keyboard while
editing a file with vi over vnc.
It makes no difference in the numlock is on or off. When I vi a file
and type 0 thru 9, I get the following:
y
x
w
v
u
t
s
r
q
p
Each key prints a letter and carriage return with one stroke.
Does anyone know how to fix this? It does not happen when I use cygwin.
I'm accessing linux machines from a windows machine. The OS's are XP
and Vista running vnc viewer and fedora core 3 through 9, red hat 4 and
5 and centos 4.3 up to 5.1. There must be a vnc setting somewhere that
needs to be corrected, but I have not been able to find anything on my
systems or researching it on the web.
Thanks for your help.
