Hi Matt,
This sounds like an MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) as described in the
following mailing-list post
(http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/2001-November/026610.html). This
is relatively common when tunnelling via VPNs, which reduce the maximum size
of the messages that your computer is able to send over the network by a
small amount.
