unable to resolve by host name

I am using the free edition and i just installed the viewer. I have a host
file that works fine with my other programs (ftp, etc) but i cannot get it
to work with VNC.  my partner has vnc on his pc and the host file works
fine.  I have tried with the just downloading the viewer, and then
downloading the package and installing only the viewer.  How do I get vnc to
recognize my host file when all the other programs on my pc recognize it
just fine?
