Not getting a server string response

I have a server setup and i am getting issues with people not being able to connect. I have opened the port needed and turned back the firewall. When I run the test ping to the server I get a successful log but no reply to the server string. Here is the exact issue. What did I miss?

Connecting to port  5900 ... succeeded. 
Waiting for server to send version string... 

After this there is no version sent.
