VNC Server on Vista

I have been trying to use the latest free version of VNC (4.1.2) on
Windows Vista Business. The viewer works fine, and the server works in
user mode if the system service is stopped (and Windows Firewall and
Defender are configured to allow it). When trying to use the system
service, I notice the following:
- there is no icon in the system notification area - not a huge problem,
but it is useful to see when there is a connection
- the configuration program gives an access denied error unless
explicitly run as Administrator - are there plans for this to bring up a
UAC prompt in future versions?
- when attempting to make a connection to the server, the view gets a
connection and asks for a password. It then gives an error saying
"server closed connection unexpectedly". The application event log for
the server has 2 entries for WinVNC4:
  * Connections: accepted: 192.168.1.11::1070
  * Connections: closed: 192.168.1.11::1070 (Unable to connect session
to Console: Access is denied. (5))
192.168.1.11 is the address of the machine trying to connect.

I realise the developers are working on Vista compatibility, and that it
takes time. Are these problems which should be fixed in a future release?

In the meantime, it might be useful for others wanting to use VNC on
Vista if there was a note on the home page or FAQs to say there are
known problems with the system service on Vista, and that the user-mode
server can be used. It took me some time to find this out.

Thanks,
Mark.
