I have VNC running on Ubuntu 6.10, and have updated my xstartup to run Gnome when establishing a session. However, when I log in with VNC, all I get is an X cursor and a waffle-weave background. No amount of changing or auto-selecting color or geometry helps. The connection is good, since I can log in, and the .log file shows activity - but I have no display whatsoever.
