Hi Bengt,
I'd like to be able to provide more help, but I'm afraid it's a long time
since I had to cross-compile with configure & I don't remember the details.
You could check the configure.in script, from which configure is built, and
see if there are any terms in there that require native compilation. I
remember the configure script we published Just Working for cross-compiles,
so you may want to check that it's picking up the right compiler & that the
compiler is configured correctly, but it's also possible that I'm
mis-remembering...
